Liberia has been elected on the
Executive Committee of the West Africa Football Union (WAFU) at the recently
held extraordinary congress in Dakar, Senegal.
Making the disclosure to our
Sports Desk yesterday, Liberia Football Association (LFA) Acting President
Cllr. S. Izetta Wesley said Liberia was elected on the 10-man WAFU Executive
Committee that include its President, Vice Presidents and others based on
the role Liberia has played over the years in WAFU activities.
LFA Acting Prexy
The Acting LFA President represented Liberia at the WAFU Extraordinary
Congress held in Dakar, Senegal.
She said former LFA President
Willard A. Russell had earlier served as one of WAFU's Vice President, and
thus the election of Liberia, represented by the Liberia Football
Association (LFA) is a clear indication that Liberians are up to the task.
Meanwhile, during the WAFU
Extrordinary Congress the pending WAFU tournament which was canceled due to
the military situation in Ivory Coast will be rescheduled at a later date
and venue. She said it was the third time that the tournament had been
canceled due to what soccer administrators called "force majeure".
Commenting further, the LFA Actnig
Boss said WAFU has decided to concentrate on youth football evidenced by the
format of the tournament which clearly pointed out that only players playing
on the continent are eligible to participate and not professional players
playing abroad.
The "Iron Lady" of Liberian football
said WAFU will seek sponsorship before the new date and venue are decided.
She related that it is not clear whether the first sponsors will still be
willing to sponsor the tournament when it is rescheduled.
The tournament was set to
commence in Ivory Coast when military hostilities broke out. At the time the
participating teams were already in the country.
Cllr. Wesley returned home this
week from the one-day WAFU Extraordinary Congress held in Dakar, Senegal.
