Liberia are out to start their 2018 CAF African Championships qualifying campaign on a high note when they meet Mauritania on Sunday at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex in Paynesville City.
But the home-based Lone Star from all indications are not fully prepared for the engagement against the Mauritanian this Sunday
The team started training just a week ago and up to now the players are still parading in their various communities and not on camp.
Sources within the FA said the Government of Liberia through the Ministry of Youth and Sports is yet to make available funding for the game.
Camping the players will involve lot of money and as such the players sleep at the homes and pay their way to practice session.
The possibility of them getting even a per diem is still in the air as the FA still reportedly owes Zimbabwe Football Chief Phillip Chiyangwa the money she borrowed to settle the indemnities of last month game against the Warriors.
Howbeit, the home-based Lone Stars are out to ensure they return to winning ways at home to book a spot in Kenya next year.
Coach James Debbah is aware that a win is important for his charges to erase their humiliating loss at the hands of Zimbabwe during their 2019 CAF Africa Cup of Nations qualifier last month.
Looking at the visitors, Mauritania will hope to continue their winning record against Liberia in the competition, having defeated them 1-0 at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex in Paynesville and 2-1 away in 2012.
Debbah has already assembled 26 local players for the clash, although the momentum is low in Monrovia.
Only national team players who are playing in their country’s own domestic league are eligible to compete in the tournament.
A total of 16 teams will qualify to play in the final tournament, including Kenya who qualified automatically as hosts.
