Djibouti Hosts Liberia March 25
-Will Lone Star Pick a Second Win?

By: Leroy M. Sonpon, III

The national team, Lone Star, is expected to play her third game in the Group A stage of the 2017 African Cup of Nations qualifiers against Djibouti on Friday, March 25, in Djibouti City, Djibouti.

Then on Monday, March 28, Liberia will host Djibouti at the Antoinette Tubman Stadium in Monrovia.

A 26-man Lone Star team will be in Djibouti City as the better-side with a win against Tunisia (1-0); unlike Djibouti who has lost her two games, against Tunisia (8-1), and Togo (2-0).

The Lone Star is second to the bottom on the Group A log with three (3) points after two games, with the remaining three games to decide the table leader.

Liberians are still hoping for the country’s qualification for their third Nations Cup appearance, after South Africa (1996) and Mali (2002).

Liberia's fate will be determined if she could haul six points from Djibouti; as a consolation against the dismal performance in the pre-qualifiers of the 2018 World Cup qualifier second round.

Foreign based Players
Unconfirmed reports say the technical team, headed by Coach James Salinsa Debbah, will recall 14 foreign based players for the home and away encounters against Djibouti.

They will include Teah Dennis (Captain), Dirkir Glay, Solomon Grimes, Dioh Williams, Tonia Tisdell, William Jerbo, Seku Conneh and Zah Krangar.
Others include Alseny Keita, Sam Johnson, Anthony Laffor, Patrick Wleh, Patrick Gerhardt and Theo Weeks.

Local based Players
With less than 45 days to the Djibouti clash, preparations for the local based players are yet to begin.

Traditionally, at least 25 players are selected to begin intense practice, and thereafter blend with 10 local players.

Some of the usual local players are Tommy Songo, Samson Giddings, Murphy ‘Oscar’ Dorley, Adolphus Marshall, Alvin McConnell , Van-Dave Harmon and Junior Barshall.
