Confirmed: Liberia Battles Ivory Coast Nov. 14

By Sylvester Worwee

Liberia will host The Elephants of Ivory Coast in the first leg of the 2018 FIFA World Cup – Russia qualifiers at the Antoinette Tubman Stadium in Monrovia on Saturday 14th November 2015, Liberia Football Association has confirmed.

Report had it earlier that the Lone Star would face the star studded Elephant of Ivory Coast on Wednesday, November 11.

“The LFA has just confirmed to FIFA the date and venue for the first leg World Cup qualifier against Ivory Coast.

“There was no change of date,” Acting LFA Secretary General, Emmanuel O. Deah said.

According to Mr. Deah, the LFA has early communicated to FIFA through it Secretary General B. Alphonso Armah that Liberia would host the Ivory Coast in the first leg of 2018 World Cup qualifiers at the ATS in Monrovia on November 14, 2015 at 4:00pm.

The revelation confirms the long-held belief that the match would be played during the week, just like the first leg tie with Guinea-Bissau, which was played on Thursday.

The day of the match which has now been confirmed for Saturday is the same day as Liberia versus Tunisia meeting in the 2017 AFCON qualifiers, which Liberia won 1-0.

The return leg comes on in three days time in The Ivory Coast on Tuesday, November17, 2015. However, the Ivoirians FA (Fédération Ivoirienne de Football) is yet to announce the venue.

The draw for the 2018 FIFA World Cup Preliminary Competition for the African Zone took place on 25 July in Saint Petersburg, Russia. The home-and-away matches (over two legs) in the second round preliminary were scheduled to take place between November 9 and 17, 2015.

The 20 teams that advance from the second round will be divided into five groups of four teams to play home-and-away round-robin matches. The winners of each group will qualify for the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

Liberia is yet to defeat the Elephant of Ivory Coast at senior level in all competitions. The two sides met 14 times - 11 win for the Elephants, while three matches ended in draws.
