The Liberia Football Association (LFA) and its sponsor, Cellcom GSM Company, will host a rally aimed at galvanizing supports from patriotic Liberians to sponsor the return of the nation’s pride, Lone Star.
The senior national soccer squad following its away triumph over the African Wild Dog of Guinea Bissau in the preliminary round of the 2018 World Cup qualifiers is expected back in the country today.
Lone Star in a bid to secure a slot in the 2018 Fifa World Cup finals, on Tuesday evening earned a 3-1 away win to progress to the next round of the qualifiers.
Thanks to William Jebor marvelous hat-trick that helped Liberia to a 4-2 aggregate over fellow West Africans, Guinea Bissau, after a disappointing 1-1 draw in the first leg at the Antoinette Tubman Stadium here in Monrovia.
At a news conference Thursday, the Acting President of the Local Football House, Musa Shannon said based on the success of the national team, the Executive committee in collaboration with its sponsor, Cellcom GSM has decided to organize a rally upon their arrival.
The rally, is aimed a celebrating Lone Star’s away victory over Guinea Bissau after 14 years without a victory in an away fixture.
“The away win speaks volume and it calls for a great celebration for the Red, White and Blue out-fit,” he said.
According to him, the LFA is very happy about the win over Bissau, and as the national colors move on to face the Elephant of Ivory Coast in the next round of the qualifiers, moneys gained from the rally will serve as support and motivation.
Mr. Shannon outlined the protocol as, “the team which arrives at 4:00 AM Friday, will recuperate ahead of the rally process that kicks-off at the Executive lodge where the team is camped, and later continue through the principal streets of Monrovia and will be end at the Antoinette Tubman Stadium (ATS).
He, however, called on all supporters of the senior national team to turn out in numbers to celebrate the away victory but admonished them to come with good conduct.
He said based on the rally, security measures will be put in place so as to curtail brusque behaviors.
Despite not stating the amount expected to raise, the Acting LFA President pointed out that it will be used for intended purpose.
