Lone Star Arrives Friday After Historic Victory

By Roland Mulbah

Thousands of Liberians will lineup the principal streets of Monrovia today in jubilant mood to receive the senior national team of Liberia, the Lone Star, as the team arrives after a historic 3-1 thrashing of Guinea Bissau last Tuesday.

The match was the second leg of the preliminary qualifier of the Russia 2018 World Cup.

According to the protocol for Lone Star arrival today, the team will touch down at the Robert International Airport via Royal Air Maroc around the morning hours today and will proceed to the team’s camp, Executive Lodge on the RIA highway for a brief stop.

Later in the afternoon, the team, headed by Liberia Football Association (LFA) President, Musa Bility, Youth and Sports Minister, Lenn Eugene Nagbe and other prominent citizens, will proceed to Monrovia and parade the principle streets of Monrovia and climax the activity with a grand rally at the famous Antoinette Tubman Stadium (ATS).

The rally is intended to raise funds for the team’s early preparation for the crunch duel against Africa champions, the Elephants of Ivory Coast next month.

In a major press conference Thursday at the ATS, acting LFA President, Musa Shannon told reporters that the rally will see prominent Liberian citizens and partners of the local football house as well as its biggest sponsor, Cellcom in attendance.

When asked if there was a specific target for the rally in terms of dollars, LFA second Vice President, Shannon said “There is no precise amount for the rally. We are asking all meaning Liberians to turnout in mass at the ATS to support the senior national team of Liberia, Lone Star,” Shannon said.

Versatile international striker, William Jebor, who plies his trade in Spain with second division outfit; SD Ponferradina scored a momentous hat-trick to give Liberia Lone Star a 3-1 away victory in Bissau.

Jebor, who was the man of the match, scored what is believed to be Liberian player’s first ever hat-trick as James Salinsa Debbah’s Lone Star broke 14 years away record by beating African Wild Dog as Guinea Bissau national football team is called 3-1 to secure a second round spot in the Russia 2018 World Cup Qualifier to meet Africa’s champions, the Elephants of Ivory Coast.

The last time Liberia’s Lone Star won a competitive match away was in 2001 when Africa football legend, George Oppong Manneh Weah came from the bench to score the only goal as Liberia beat Sierra Leone 1-0 in the 2002 Korea/Japan World Cup qualifier.
