Liberian Football Champions BYC fought visiting Malian Football Champions Stade Malien de Bamako to a 1-0 win in the first leg of the African Champion League Preliminary at the aged old Antoinette Tubman Stadium (ATS) in central Monrovia.
Right Back Prince Kennedy scored the lone goal in the 87th minute when he converted a penalty after Mark Paye had been brought down by the Malian keeper.
The two teams showed great skills but could not create lots of goal scoring chances.
Mark Paye failed to put BYC in front in the 36th minute when he received a beautiful connection from captain, Van Dave Harmon in a counter attack.
Paye had only the keeper to beat on that occasion, but throw his effort off target.
Before the penalty, Aboubacar Diarra had the chance to give the visitors the lead when he overpowered the central defense of BYC, but his strike which beat goalkeeper Allenton Sembeh landed on the top post at his disbelief.
Dave Harmon clever pass in the 86th minute found its way through to Mark Paye who try beating the on rushing keeper, but the keeper brought him down for a penalty which was beautifully taken by left back Prince Kennedy.
With only holding midfielders available for Coach Cooper Sannor, BYC fielded three, but things did not go on as planned.
Passing Midfielder, Benjamin Gbemy did not feature due to a 90 days suspension handed him by the club, just five days to the game.
Gbemy will not be in Mali for the return leg, are two other central midfielders who are nursing injury.
BYC who have targeted reaching the group stage as their key focus this season need to avoid defeat in the return leg next weekend.
