First division champions, Barrack Young Controllers (BYC-1) Friday closed the gap with FC Fassel after Van-Dave Harmon strained himself to get the winning goal in their 2-1 win over Gardnerville-based Keitrace FC at the Blue Field in Monrovia.
Following a one-all draw in the first half, captain Harmon fought to put his leg through to hit in a cross from the left flank in the 66th minute which led to the striker sustaining a knee injury.
The “Go Blue Boys” of BYC conceded their first defeat against Mighty Barrolle in their final 2016 league fixture.
It was in the 5th minute when BYC’s Prince Saydee broke the deadlock with his left foot strike from the left corner, outside of the 18 yard box, which entered through the lower left corner of the goalpost.
Keitrace thereafter made their first unsuccessful attempt after Titus Kamara took a left-footed strike that traveled over the bar.
Coach Cooper Sannoh’s boys tried to double their goal advantage but Saydee missed a low cross from the left wing. Keitrace were preventing themselves from conceding their first defeat in their unbeaten run, and got the equalizer in the 31st minute after Emmanuel Dee headed in a cross from left-back Kamara down the left angle to end the half 1-1.
Upon resumption, the Go Blue Boys through forward Saydee repeated the same strike that led to the opening goal, but goalkeeper Godfred David of Keitrace was in a better position to bring the ball under control.
Both teams continued their attacks to get a winner, with BYC creating most of the chances and finally getting the winner through Harmon.
The win was BYC’s fourth out of five matches in the new league season and is now three points behind FC Fassel. On the other hand, it was the first defeat for Keitrace FC out of five matches and they are now 5th on the table.
In other league matches, Monrovia Club Breweries dropped one step down following a goalless draw against ELWA United, who moved a step above to 10th place in Saturday’s first game, while Invincible Eleven, who are yet to secure a win, were squeezed out 1-0 by Watanga FC.
On Sunday, two goals from Varney Sando and a goal from Grosso Sloboh gave LISCR FC a 3-1 victory over Mighty Barrolle, who defeated BYC in their last league match at the Blue Field.
LISCR FC are now third on the league table with 9 points out of five matches and are yet to concede a defeat, while the defeat for the Rollers moved them to the 11th position on the league’s table.
