WAFU Tourney To Honor President Sirleaf In October?

By: Omari Jackson

At a recent West Africa Football Union (WAFU) meeting in Dakar, Senegal, Mr. Musa Bility, president of the Liberia Football Association (LFA) and who was elected one of its vice presidents, proposed a tournament this year in October, to honor President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf as part of activities to climax her final term in office as President of Liberia.

Mr. Bility’s proposal was accepted by the WAFU commission and Liberia Football Association (LFA), was charged with the responsibility to work along with the WAFU Secretariat to ensure that October 2016 see the successful hosting of the tournament in Monrovia.

October is fast approaching and nothing has been heard about what the LFA is doing with WAFU Secretariat to get the game going as intended. But the question that is yet to be answered is about the venue for the tournament since several countries would be participating in it.

Presently, there is the Antoinette Tubman Stadium, and just may be the Blue Field and I am not sure the two grounds can host four to six countries in a highly contested tournament to honor Africa’s proverbial Iron Lady’s legacy to Liberia and Africa.

LFA sources are silent on what is going on and there have been no reports about what WAFU is doing to ensure that the tournament is successful, as things speed up to their climax.

LFA President Musa Bility has a legacy to make and he knows that making propositions must go along with a realistic and corresponding arrangement and foresight to ensure their successes.

The recent debacle with the Togolese national team suggests that it is about time that we find means to get our local teams together and ready to handle national assignments. The WAFU Tournament could be one means to test the strength of our local members of the national soccer team.

With this article it is hoped that the LFA would give us an update on what is going on, concerning the WAFU Tournament to honor our president. This initiative is loaded because it could lead President Sirleaf to make one of the greatest commitments in her political career as it affects the overall development of sports in Liberia.
