COUNTY MEET RECAP: MONTSERRADO QUALIFIES AS 13 COUNTIES FIGHT FOR SEVEN SPOTS

By LFA Press

Montserrado County became the first team to qualify for the Quarter-Finals of the 2015-16 National County Sports Meet despite losing 0-1 to Gbarpolu County in today’s Group IV match at the Nancy B. Doe Sports Stadium in Kakata.

A 47th minute goal from Gbarpolu’s Brown Kortu was enough to give his side all three points; however, Montserrado qualified due to that 3-1 win against Margibi on Sunday.

Gbarpolu County will only need a draw against Margibi County in the final Group IV match on Thursday to seal their place as Group Winners. Gbarpolu can also squeeze through to the Quarter-Finals if they lose by one-goal score line while Margibi County needs to win by at least a two-goal score line to qualify for the Quarter-Finals.

In Group I matches held at the Doris Williams Sports Stadium in Buchanan, River Gee County maintained their 100 percent record with another 1-0 win this time against Bong County while the defending champions and hosts Grand Bassa County were leading Sinoe County 1-0 before the match was interrupted due to fights.

In Group II matches played in Sanniquellie, the hosts Nimba County defeated Grand Cape Mount County 2-1 while Maryland County defeated Bomi County with the same score line. Grand Cape Mount County became the first team to be eliminated.

In Group III matches held in Zwedru, the hosts Grand Gedeh County bounced back from their opening day loss to defeat Grand Kru County 1-0 while Rivercess County and Lofa County settled to a 1-1 tie.

The competition will continue on Thursday, December 17, 2015 with 13 counties fighting for the remaining seven spots:
