Union Douala returns to Monrovia with Nimba United waiting

By Staff Reporter

Liberia's 2014-2015 national league champion, Nimba United will host Union Douala in the opening rounds of African club competitions next season.

The Liberian league champions Nimba United will start its mission at the 2016 CAF Champions League directly from Monrovia 12–14 Feb and return leg will take place on 26–28 Feb.

This is the Mountaineers first foray into intercontinental competition.

Union Doula, the Champions of Cameroon comes with a strong pedigree in International competition. Raising trophy the African Cup of Champions Clubs in 1979 now called the Champions League and also winning the African Cup Winners cup in 1981.

In the last CAF Champions League, the Cameroonian side was paired again with Liberia. Defeating LISCR 2-1 and 1-0 to advance on a 3-1 aggregate to the 2nd round.

For the Mountaineers, this will be a herculean task as the LFA league was shorten due to the Ebola pandemic. This has resulted in Nimba Untied playing a limited amount of games. This might me a disadvantage to playing a team that has been engaged in a complete league schedule.

Nimba United won the championship after defeating LISCR FC 4-2 in the second leg of the national league in post-match penalty. The full 90 minutes of play ended a zero-all draw. Nimba United, who came from the second division last league season to become the champions for the 2015 Liberia Football Association national league.

The draw, which took place in Senegal on Friday, exempted both Egyptian giants from the preliminary stage and revealed their possible opponents in the round of 32 which will commence in mid-March.

55 teams each from the 56 member associations of CAF will take part in the two competitions – 12 highest ranked FAs are eligible to enter two teams in the competitions.

This will be the 52nd Edition of the Champions League and the 20th Edition under the current format.

The Egyptian champions Zamalek will face the winner from Nimba FC of Liberia and Cameroonian side Union Douala.
