Zambia Gets Share Of
Liberia
By Julu M. Johnson, Jr.
One of the last matches in Group One of the joint
African Nations and World Cup 2006 qualifiers ended 5-0 in favor of
the Chipoloplo of Zambia against Liberia’s Lone Star at the Antoinette
Tubman Stadium (ATS) in Monrovia on Saturday.
Despite a goalless first half, the Kalusha Bwalya boys got
two goals from substitute Ignatius Lwipa and another brace from Mumaba
Numba, while Nchimunya Mweeiwa scored the other.
The Liberian squad featured a bunch of locals with the
likes of Isaac Tondo, Prince Garwo, Chris Dukuly, Saylee Swen, Varmah
Kpoto, Robert Teah and Aloysius Pennie wearing the red, while and blue
colors without scoring a goal inside an empty stadium after security
fears prevented fans from attending.

FIFA chose to bring forward the date of the qualifier by one week
having being scheduled to have it played in Monrovia on the weekend of
8 to 9 October, 2005. But FIFA decided that Liberia and Zambia clash
in their return leg a week earlier.
The change in fixtures by FIFA was a result of
the Liberian general and presidential elections that are scheduled to
take place on October 11 throughout the country, two days before the
original date of the match in Monrovia.
Both the Lone Star of Liberia and the Chipolopolo of
Zambia had no chance of qualifying for the 2006 World Cup in Germany.
However, the Zambian national team had already booked a place along
with the two top sides in Group One, the Hawks of Togo, in first
place, and the Lions of Teranga of Senegal, for the next African
Nations Cup finals in Egypt.
Liberia has only won one match and drew once, losing the rest of the
ten matches played.
During its last away match, the Lone Star fell 3-0 in Lome at the
hands of Togo.
