We Need George Weah Back

A former vice president for operation of the Liberia Football Association (LFA), Samuel Jlakrong, says there is a need for Liberia Soccer Ambassador, George Oppong Weah to return to the national soccer team – the Lone Star.

Speaking to the Analyst in an interview last Friday Mr. Jlakrong said a man like George Weah who has played at the highest level football in world cannot be left behind in such crucial competitions.

He said the Liberian soccer legend’s achievement and experience over the years in the game clearly indicates the necessity for him to rejoin the team in order to strengthen it in nation’s campaign for its two respective competitions.

Mr. Jlakrong argued that it was Weah’s presence with the team during the past years that Liberia qualified twice for the African Nations Cup, and at the same time nearly qualified for the Japan/Korea 2002 World Cup.

According to him, one should not see Ambassador Weah as an ordinary person, but rather as a great access in football the circles.

If Liberia should make a significant impact in the ongoing CAF & FIFA competitions, Mr. Jlakrong noted that there is a need to reconcile our differences with the Liberia Soccer Ambassador in order to move the team forward.

According to the former LFA official, he believe that George Weah wants to return to the team but hypocrisy and deceit is the major factor responsible for his staying away from the Lone Star.

The former official has meanwhile criticized the Government of Liberia and members of the Sports Writers Association of Liberia (SWAL) for not doing much to promote sports.

Mr. Jlakrong alleged that the Gyude Bryant led government is insensitive to the sports and that as a result, the national team is being saddled with financial problems.

He noted that government officials are making foreign trips that consume huge sum of money, but the fails to settle little financial problems that are keeping the team from making progress.

For the sports writers, Mr. Jlakrong said they are not doing much to promote the game of soccer in the country.

He said that sports journalists were only interested in writing about the national team or Invincible Eleven and Mighty Barrolle when these teams are playing their games, but they do not develop a context reportage that will engender the development of sports.

According to Mr. Jlakrong, sports journalists should be going into the various subcommittees and reporting what is taking place.

In that way, he maintains, the young and talented players would develop the appetite for the game.
