VANCOUVER ( Thursday, April 10, 2003) - The Whitecaps F.C. Men's Team has signed Liberian international striker Musa Shannon (pronounced MOO-sa). The 27-year old was with the Colorado Rapids of MLS last season after earlier starring for the Tampa Bay Mutiny, as well as Maritimo of the Portuguese First Division.

"Musa's credentials are excellent, with a high level of play in MLS, Europe, and at the international level, where Liberia has been doing surprisingly well," said Bobby Lenarduzzi, Whitecaps Director of Soccer Operations, "and he comes to us highly recommended by Canadian international Frank Yallop, who both coached and played with Musa at Tampa Bay."

Musa Shannon is a current member of Liberia's National Team, where he is a teammate of former World Footballer of the Year George Weah. Shannon has 14 caps and 1 goal for Liberia, and scored in his country's celebrated 3-1 win over Ghana in World Cup qualifying on January 8, 2001. Liberia narrowly missed out on the 2002 World Cup, finishing just one point behind powerful Nigeria in the final round, after leading the group early on.

In MLS, Shannon scored an impressive 20 goals and 7 assists in 50 regular season games with the Tampa Bay Mutiny from 1997 to 1999. His best season was 1999, when he led the Mutiny in scoring with 12 goals and 5 assists in 27 games. He was originally acquired by Tampa Bay in the third-round of the 1997 MLS College Draft, where he was selected out of Robert Morris University of Pittsburgh, PA.

He left Tampa Bay in 2000 and joined Maritimo of the Portuguese First Division, playing there for two seasons. When his contract expired in 2002, he returned to the US, signing with the Colorado Rapids of MLS on July 26, but had difficulty cracking their already established line-up and saw limited playing time. He was released by Colorado on November 5, the same day the team released former Whitecaps defender Rick Titus. Earlier this year Shannon had tryouts with two other MLS sides, the New York/New Jersey MetroStars and DC United.

Musa Shannon (6' 170 lb; 183 cm 77 kg) was born August 1, 1975 in Monrovia, Liberia. He left Liberia in 1990 due to the onset of civil war, and moved to the USA where he earned a scholarship to attend Robert Morris. He holds a degree in Business Administration.

Shannon is expected to be in the line-up for the Whitecaps first preseason game of the year, as Vancouver takes on the expansion Abbotsford Rangers of the USL Premier Development League in Chilliwack on Saturday, a 7:30 p.m. kick-off at the Chilliwack Landing Sports Ground.

Whitecaps training camp continues this week with daily training from 4:30pm to 6:30pm and media availability from 4:00pm to 4:30pm. Due to the poor weather, members of the media should contact Colin Metcalfe at (604) 809-8227 to confirm training locations, which shift between Burnaby Lake West, Rupert Park, and BCIT, depending on field conditions.
