The Minister of Youth and Sports Counselor Wheatonia Y. Dixon-Barnes is deeply troubled by the sudden upsurge of violence that engulfed Monrovia and its suburbs last Friday.

The incidence also compelled the Youth and Sports Ministry to abandon the celebration of the 2004 National Youth Day. The event was scheduled to be held in Kakata, Margibi County.

Speaking on Monday, Counselor Barnes, upon entering her office, said her Ministry was concerned about the violence because it was largely carried out by youths. The Minister, in a release, noted that it is this sector of the population that her Ministry is responsible to mold.

The Youth and Sports Minister said that the current violence has the potential to sow deep seeds of religious intolerance, prejudice and disharmony.

The Sports Minister was quoted as saying Liberia is our common heritage and we should all join forces to protect and perpetuate its hegemony.

Minister Barnes also said, At a time like this when the Peace Process is gaining momentum, we should be concentrating on transforming our society from militarism to peace and reconstruction.

She warned young people to allow themselves to be used as change agents in the process of transformation rather than being catalysts for destruction.

Counselor Barnes, hence, called on the young people of Liberia who are involved in the current violence to leave the streets and return to their homes so as to give the security forces the opportunity to restore calm and normalcy to the city
