3/ 17/ 2004 Monrovia-Despite frantic
efforts being exerted by the Liberia Basketball Federation (LBF) to
participate in this year's Zone III Basketball qualifiers, there seems
to be uncertainty looming for Liberia's participation in the Burkina
Faso games.
According to LBF General Secretary Fred Pratt, confirmation of
Liberia's participation has been made following discussion with
relevant sports authorities.
However, things have not been fine in terms of getting money for a
successful participation.
Mr. Pratt, lauding the efforts of Minister of Youth and Sports, Cllr.
Wheatonia Dixon Barnes, appealed to her and the Government of Liberia
to assist the team travel to Burkina Faso for the preliminaries of the
competition.
He said the failure of the Government to ensure the participation of
the basketball U-20 team will
discourage the players from playing the game. "This is now the time
that we focus on all sports and not football alone, he added.
Mr. Pratt said the LBF needs about US$28,000 to participate in the
competition. He said this amount will cover air fare to and fro,
purchasing of uniforms, medications, balls, fixing of passing
passports, among others.
Meanwhile, players selected on the U-20 basketball team have begun
training under the watchful eyes of coaches Boie Corvah and Jerome
Pelham respectively.
Those training include Richelieu Allision, Quincy Boe, Wureh Brownell
(all of Uhuru Kings), Jethro Bing, Reuben MArshall, Dasely Zulu,
Michael Wolo (all of Barrolle), Suah Williams, Mark Smith, Alphonso
Kuiah, Raphael Quaye (all of NPA Pythons), Barchue Toure, VEsselly
Yakpazuo, Burliegh Porte, Williamd Kennedy (all of LPRC Oilers),
Samuel Davidson (Barnersville
Snipers)and Charles Kiawu (Raider).
