November 11, 2004

Following recent violence that disrupted normal activities in the capital, Monrovia, the United Nation Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) community outreach soccer tournament is expected resume this weekend in Kakata, Margibi County.

According to the Coordinator, Uras Brooks, the resumption of the tourney is in continuation of the phase two of the month-long competition.

Mr. Brooks said that already several teams have advanced to the knockout stage of competition and is expected to conclude the second phase soon.

He said the soccer event was organized by UNMIL Public Affairs Department under the community outreach programs in a bid to help unify Liberians during this crucial time of the nation's history.

This edition of the community outreach soccer competition is mainly designed to target child soldiers and community inhabitants through peace and reconciliation.

This is the second time such a tournament has been held to unify the community inhabitants and the Ex-combatants.

Many sports analysts and ordinary Liberians have praised the initiative of the UNMIL PR office and have termed the tournament as "worth-while" and "important". They believe the event is prone to unifying the ex-combatants and non-combatants thereby encouraging them to co-exist in peace and harmony.
