Two Liberians
For Budapest Marathon
By Julu M. Johnson, Jr.
Two Liberian track and field athletes are expected to compete in the
Plus Budapest Marathon in Hungary this month.
According to the head of the Athletes Commission Festus Robinson,
Henry Tucker and Reuben Gaye will be in Europe to run in the
marathon from September 30 to October 4, 2004.
Quoting Hungary-based Liberian soccer star John Moses, Robinson said
the participation of the two will be the first by Liberians in the
history of the event.
Both Tucker and Gaye are national athletes of the Liberia Track and
Field Federation (LTFF).
Tucker recently formed part of the Liberian team that participated
in the West African Junior Athletic Championship in Benin.
Before then, Tucker emerged second to the now United States-based
athlete Bill Rogers in the LBDI Marathon.
Tucker is known to be the fastest local athlete in the 800 meters
category.
As for Gaye, he is among the best 10,000 meters runners in Liberia
having run in a West African championship.
To facilitate their trip to Europe, the athletes have sought
assistance from meaningful Liberians such as Madam Aicha Conneh,
wife of LURD chairman Sekou Conneh, IE president Isaac Nyenabo,
MODEL Vice Chairman Boi Bleaju Boi and GSA Director Edward Farley.
Others appealed to are LURD Gen. Ophorie Diah, George Oppong Weah,
presidential aspirant Cornelius Hunter, LPRC Deputy Managing
Director Mobutu Nyepan, Finance Minister Lusinee Kamara and LFA
president Izetta Wesley.
Robinson said the two athletes need plane tickets, per diems and
hotel accommodation.
