Reports gathered by The Analyst indicate that the international return match between Liberia Female U-20 and their Algerian counterpart has been cancelled due to the withdrawal of the North Africans.
There was however no official statement from the LFA on the Algerians withdrawal up to press time, even though the return leg is slated for Sunday at the ATS. Liberia won the maiden leg two weeks ago 3-2 and is said to be in pole readiness for the FIFA U-20 Women Championship, dubbed Russia 2006. Apparently sensing that they were coming on a fruitless mission, the Algerians threw in the towel to enable the Liberia national Female U-20 under the tutelage of former national team goalie Lucretius Togba to cruise to the third and final round.
They are now scheduled to meet the fancier Nigerian female U-20., if our information is correct. The first leg of this nervy West African derby comes on April 30 in Monrovia, while the second leg is on May 13 in Nigeria.
Many say this would be a litmus test for the promising Liberian squad as they aim to make the impossible to be possible in their debut appearance in such high profile event.
