Cephas eyes Liberia call-up

By Hassan Kiawu
BBC Sport, USA

Liberia's McColm Cephas, who is turning in some eye-catching performances in the United States, believes he is the man to help revive the fortunes of his country.

Cephas insists Liberian football can be as strong as it was in the days of the legendary George Weah and James Debbah.

The 27-year-old striker recently signed a two-year deal with division one side, Carolina Rail Hawks.

"I have watched him develop over the years, he has some individual flair," British coach Leigh Cowlishaw said when appraising the Cephas's talents.

"He certainly doesn't have an ego as he works extremely hard. He has a great passion for the game and above all he's a team player.

"He's got speed and an eye for goal. All you need to do is to put the ball in front of him and he can face any defender."

And Cephas himself is keen to play for Liberia and help them qualify for the 2008 African Cup of Nations in Ghana.

"It's my desire as a player to perform for my country and this year my goal is to help my country qualify for the Nations Cup," he told BBC Sport.

"Liberia needs all the help it can get from its foreign-based players.

"For me wearing my country's colours is a burning desire and if I'm given the opportunity I'll give a good account of myself."

The player acknowledges that the Lone Star has lost steam in its recent years performances but he is optimistic that Liberia can rise up again.

"As long as Liberia sorts out the issue of financial support for the national team and invests in young talent, then we will be a force to reckon with in Africa."

But Cephas is aware that Liberia's coaches may well be unaware of his talent.

"I think I should take the responsibility to call them up more, I do speak to one of two people at the sports ministry once in a while.

"I'm quite sure that with the support of the government and public combined with my skills and ability, and working along with my fellow team-mates, we can take Liberia to new heights in African football."
