Counselor Wheatonia Dixon-Barnes
By Julu M. Johnson, Jr.
The Minister of Youth and Sports has spoken for the
first time since Liberia was beaten 3-0 at home to the Lions of
Teranga of Senegal in Monrovia. Counselor Wheatonia Dixon-Barnes
cited newsmen on Wednesday to state her Ministry's position on the
riot that followed the match last Sunday.
According to her, the Sports Ministry was mainly
concerned about the deaths and injuries that occurred as well as the
destruction done to properties on the day of the match. As a result,
the Sports Minister wanted to know the cause of the riot, the way
the deaths occurred and those responsible. She also wanted to know
those responsible for the looting and vandalizing of homes and
properties.
"In order to get answers to all these and other
questions, we believe that an investigation is in order," Said
Minister Barnes.
In order to investigate the circumstances
surrounding the riot, the Sports Minister announced the setting up
of a seven-man committee headed by former Liberian FA President
Willard Russell. The Committee also comprises Cllr. Krubo Kollie,
Chief football referee Alex Nagbo, Press Union of Liberia Vice
President Malcolm Joseph, Lemuel Sherman, Nathan E. Mitchell and
Tonia Wiles.
She noted that the investigation committee will also make
recommendations to guide against the reoccurrence of the incidence
on Sunday.
