ROBERTS SHINE in MALI


Towering Liberian international defender Omega Roberts is said to be in ever green form in the West African state of Mali and has since established himself as a reliable proponent in the hear of the defense of elite side Club Olympique de Bamako (COB). The 20 year old who has fellow Liberian International Melvin Okoro Kicmett as playmate, has shown class in Mali as his superb form continues to woo not only the ordinary fans but his teammates, officials and analysts.

Nicknamed Rio Ferdinand due to his intelligence, technique, composure and physical structure, the worthy rearguard has already helped the club win one trophy, the Top four where the likes of Djoliba and Stade de Malien were thought bitter football lessons.

Over the weekend, the young but experience center back needed as man of the match when his side COB pinned Duguwolofila 1-0 in a special organized tournament as the teams prepare for the league which is slated for December 13.

According to a dispatch from that country, the lithe marking defender capped a wonderful evening of fantastic performance when he made a goal line clearance in the 89th minute to enable his side win the match by the solitary goal margin.

Next weekend, the promising player will lead the backline in their plum fixture against Bakaridjan in the final of the lucrative competition.

The lad who made his international debut for country against the Amavubis of Rwanda in his side nervy 3-2 win in the qualifiers of the 2008 Nations Cup qualifiers featured came to the fore when he styled for youthful Gedi & Sons in the Second and then First Division.

His impressive form landed him at Ivorian out Sewe Sports and featured against Liberian Champions Mighty Barrolle in the 2007 African Champions league which his side won on a 3-2 goal aggregate. Their journey in the competition however ended to Cameroonian top club Cotton Sports Garoua who were interestingly led by the Liberian teenager sensation Alex Nimely who is now in the fold of English Premiership side Manchester City.

Omega, the "Liberian Rio Ferdinand" then moved to the Cameroonian top flight where he styled for TIKO that ended as Champions in the league in 2008. He then moved on to Congo Brazzaville where he ended as the best foreign player in the league due to his great display in the defensive third with Diables Norries.

Defender Roberts and the Turkish based Jimmy Dixon whose style is reminiscent of Ferdinand of Manchester United as well are at the moment arguably the two most reliable center backs Liberia can rely on for international competitions.

After his exploits in Ivory Coast, Cameroon and Congo Brazzaville, omega is keen to replicate such form in the Malian top flight, but he is yet to sign on with the club, and as a free agent, the youngster is said to be looking for the opportunity to make a breakthrough to Europe or else where when the transfer window opens shortly.
