President Sirleaf Turns To LFA!
-Allocates US$ 20,000 For Grassroots Football

By Roland M. Mulbah

Though her dream to see Liberia’s Lone Star participate in the 2010 world cup in South Africa, the first ever world cup on African ground was not realized, it seems President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, widely known as Iron Lady is now gearing toward watching the red, white and blue outfit participates in the 2012 African Nations cup.

Liberiansoccer.com Senior Reporter Roland M. Mulbah leafs through the details of the record US$20,000.00 allocated in the 2009/2010 draft National budget to the Liberia Football Association (LFA) by the Ellen Johnson Sirleaf led government for grassroots football.

In an attempt to develop youth football going as far down to grassroots football, for the first time since she took over as president of the Republic of Liberia in 2006, the chief patron of sports, President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf led administration has allocated US$20, 000.00 for grassroots football in the 2009/2010 draft National budget to the Liberia Football Association (LFA).

Unlike the 2008/2009 fiscal budget which did not get any allocation, the Cllr. Sombo Izetta Wesley led administration now has something to laugh about in the 2009/2010 draft fiscal budget if passed by the National Legislature.

Many have hailed President Sirleaf’s Unity party (UP) led government so far for the promotion of grassroots football, which pundits believe will bring the younger football generation to the limelight as the red, white and blue outfit, Lone Star gears up for the 2012 African Nations’ cup qualifier and other competitions.

Though President Sirleaf’s dream of watching Lone Star at the 1010 world cup in South Africa was not realized, many still believe with the allocation of the US$20, 000.00, the chief patron has the prospect of watching her Lone Star in a major competition, perhaps the 2012 nations’ cup.

It is not yet clear whether the amount will be approved by the National Legislature.

In other allocations, the Liberia Basketball Federation (LBF) was allocated from US$2,000.00 to US10, 000.00, while the Liberia Kickball Federation (LKF) from US$3,000.00 to US$6,000.00.

The Inter- School Sports Association (ISSA) has been allocated an essential increment from US$3,000 to US$10,000.00, while the Liberia Women and Sports Association for the first time has been allocated US$5,000.00.

Other allocations for sporting institutions are, Boxing US$3,000.00, Table Tennis US$5,000.00, Track and Field US$5,000.00, Swimming US$3,000.00 and Bowling and Canoe US$3,000.00.

Others are Amputee Football Federation US$3,000.00, Wrestling US$3,000.00, Karate US$3,000.00, Golf US$3,000.00, Lawn Tennis US$3,000.00 and Handball US$3,000.00.

The rest are the National Paralympics US$3,000.00, Taekwondo US$3,000.00, Cycling US$5,000.00 and Weight Lifting US$4,000.00.

The surprise of the 2009/2010 draft budget is the National Football team of Liberia, Lone Star which has a decline from US$289,000 to US$200, 00, while other National teams have major increment from US$201,166.00 to US$222,000.00.

The National High School Athletics Championship and national High School Football Association in this year’s fiscal budget have vital allocations of US$ 20,000.00 and 50,000.00.

An official of the Ministry of Youth and Sports (MYS) told Liberiansoccer.com that the incremental in the budgets of sporting associations and sports related institutions in the 2009/2010 fiscal budget are subject to the ratification and approval of the National Legislature.
