President’s Cup
Kickoff March 8

The Chairman of the
Committee Mr. David Kortie

All is now set to jumpstart the President Cup
tournament which was suppose to start last February but called off.
The Chairman of the Committee Mr. David Kortie disclosed that the
tournament will now kickoff on Saturday March 8 at the Samuel K. Doe
Sports Complex in Paynesville.
He noted that they are in full readiness to
commence the one-week event after several days of delay which was due
to technical reasons. He revealed that all is on course with the
US$78,000.00 budget target for the entire event.
Mr. Kortie said all those that were written to
sponsor the event, especially the business institutions, were
responding positively. “This year President’s Cup promises to be
different from the previous ones with attractive prizes,” the Chairman
asserted.
The first prize for the male category, he
disclosed, is US$3,000, runners-up US$2,000 and third place US$1,500
while in the female category, the first place receives US$2,000, the
runners-up US$1,000 and the third place US$500.
He said there will be awards for the Most
Valuable Player, top goal scorer, best defender, best goalkeeper and
player of the day in both categories of the tourney.
Mr. Kortie also used the occasion to call on
goodwill sports lovers to help in supporting the event by turning out
in mass at the Samuel K. Doe Sports Complex in Paynesville on Saturday
and Sunday and as well as at the Antoinette Tubman Stadium on March
12.
One other good news is that each Premier team is
allowed to field three Liberian professional players who are on
vacation in the country. With this latest development, some clubs have
hired the services of these experience players to beef up their squads
ahead of the March 8 showdown.
On Saturday, female side, Tito United faces
Antaries in the opening match. Gedi & Sons will face Watanga while NPA
and LISCR will meet the last match of the day.
On Sunday, Kortie IE meets Blanco. LPRC-Oilers
and Mark Pro will come face to face in second game and Monrovia Black
Stars who were recently eliminated from the CAF Cup competition will
sort things out with Mighty Blue Angels.
The twelve Premiership teams will receive US$500
while the eight (8) female teams will receive US$250 each to help
prepare their teams.
Mr. Kortie has admonished the media to bolster
the publicity of the tourney and has promised to meet with some of the
media houses in the country before the kickoff.
