On Sunday
of the week, history was
made when the President
Madam Ellen Johnson Sirleaf
for the first time visited
the Antoinette Tubman
Stadium to witness a
football match.
The event
was the final of the Lone
Star fund raising tournament
between the illustrious
Indonesian Based side and
the Lone Star U-23. The
tournament coincided with
the formulation of the
highly rated organization,
Sport for the Development of
the Underprivileged (SDU).
To ensure
that the triangular
tournament had the much
needed excitement and verve,
the SDU under the
helmsmanship of the
philanthropist cum sport man
Emmanuel Geeza Williams
provided a giant sized
trophy as well as awards for
the most valuable player
(MVP), top scorer, most
improved player, best
goalkeeper, best defender
and best referee.
When the
“Iron Lady” touched the
artificial turf of the
stadium, the innovative
Geeza was one of those
personalities that were
introduced to her, as she
expressed delight over his
organization’s
breakthrough.
Observers
described the scene as a
memorable one as evidence of
the SDU keen interest in
catering to the needs of the
destitute, impoverished and
vulnerable in the society
through the area of sport.
Through
the instrumentality of the
SDU Liberia is to partake in
this year edition of the
Homeless world cup in cape
Town, South Africa. The
competition which is slated
for September is expected to
feature an avalanche of
street stars round the
world.
The
Liberian team will be
sponsored by the sporting
firm ‘NIKE’. The SDU boss
has been touring the globe
negotiating for the
development of Liberian
sports, and pundits continue
to hail him for his high
level of commitment in the
campaign to bring good
tidings to the country.
