President’s Cup Reaches Finals

The 2008 President's Cup has entered the final stages in both female
and male categories.
In the male Premier League version, Mighty Barrolle, LPRC Oilers and
Liberia's Black Star will battle in the grand final for the cash at
stake.
Tito United and Blanco are the two teams that have qualified for the
grand final of the female division.
On Sunday, March 16, 2008, Tito United defeated Professional Anchor
Sisters on post match penalties after a 1-1 draw to reach the grand
final. A day earlier, Blanco shocked Earth Angels similarly on post
penalties to grab the first female final ticket.
Also on Sunday, March 16, 2008, Liberia's Black Star whipped Roots FC
1-0 through a spot kick from rising star Sengbe Kennedy. On the
previous day, LPRC Oilers overcame LISCR FC on post match penalties
following a scoreless draw. LISCR defender Thomas Nyanfor missed a
penalty during the match.
The reigning President’s Cup champions Mighty Barrolle outclassed Gedi
& Sons on Thursday, March 13, 2008 at the Antoinette Tubman Stadium (ATS).
The 2007 Premier League champions Invincible Eleven (IE) was on
Wednesday, March 12, 2008 eliminated from the ongoing President’s Cup.
The 2007 Premier League Champions saw their debut match turned into
disappointment by young but aggressive Roots FC.
The full time saw the two Premier League teams ending it 1-1 after IE
goalkeeper Melvin King failed to convert a penalty during the field of
play.
During the penalty shootout, Roots took the day after scoring three
shots against two for the Sunshine Yellow. Also on Wednesday, Earth
Angels thrashed Determined Girls 12-0 in the female category of the
President’s Cup.
The President’s Cup began on Saturday, March 8, 2008 at the Samuel
Kanyon Doe (SKD) Sports Complex in Paynesville, Tito United whipped
Antares Sisters 11-0 in game one involving female teams.
Later on, Gedi and Sons slimly dumped Watanga FC, whereas LISCR
crushed NPA Anchors 2-0 through Patrick Wleh alias ‘Ronaldinho’. The
tournament switched to the ATS with another three matches, beginning
with a 8-0 victory for Blanco ahead of Kortie Invincible Eleven (IE)
in the female category.
In the Premier League version, LPRC Oilers defeated Mark Professionals
2-1 before Mighty Blue Angels bowed to Liberia’s Black Stars 2-3.
Twelve Premier League teams alongside six female teams began clashing
for fabulous prizes in the rejuvenated President’s Cup.
The games started after a parade that kicked off from the TB Annex
towards the SKD Sports Complex.
Ahead of the President’s Cup, the twelve Premier League clubs
collected US$500 each for preparations, while their female
counterparts took US$250 each.
The tournament’s champion in the male race would take US$3,000
dollars; runners-up would collect US$2,000 and US$1,500 for a third
place team.
The women champions would get US$2,000; the runners-up would be
entitled to US$1,000 and US$500 for the third place team.
Individual award winners in both male and female categories are
expected to receive a total US$1,450.
