One Out, One In- CAF Champions League

There were contrasting fortunes for the Liberian pair of Anthony Snothi Laffor and Ben McCarthy Martins as they showed case their talents with their respective clubs in the African Champions League.

With a hunt for a place in the 1/16 finals, Laffor's Super Sports United of South Africa surrendered a goal lead to visiting Kampala City Council (KCC) as the match ended 1-1 to see the Ugandan side through.

But, while it was bad tidings for Laffor, it was good tidings for his compatriot Martins as his side ZESCO United tamed Africa Sports of Ivory Coast 2-0 to cruise through.

The South African champs disappointed their fans at the BiDvest stadium when they failed to win 1-0 to qualify to the next round. They took the lead through substitute Sikhwivhilu after 57 minutes, but the Ugandan outfit rallied brilliantly as star striker Bongole equalized in the 79th minute due to erratic goalkeeping from Andre Arandse of Super Sports after he dropped a cross right before the lurking Bongole.

The visitors were then reduced to ten men in the final three minutes after Samuel Mubiru was red carded due to a second bookable offense, but Super Sports with Laffor spearheading the front line could not make use of numerical superiority.

Ben Martins of Zesco ensured his side go through against their more illustrious Ivorian opponents, Africa Sports with a 2-0 dumping. After a host of incessant pressure, Nelson Mbou broke the deadlock after 19 minutes which would mark the only goal of the half. Then in the second period, the gritty Liberian who was playing just behind his side front two was upended in the box. Club mate Enoch Sakala kept his cool to convert the penalty ten minutes to the final time as the electricity side ZESCO United are now qualified to meet Malian giants Djoliba in the next round.
