Need For The
Players Union

In contemporary football, the players are the most important
segment. Unlike previous times where club officials or some other
individuals were hailed or even glorified, thus virtually ignoring
the wonderful works of the guys on the park who take the bruise in
showcasing their talents via heroic and brave defending, incisive
and gritty midfield work as well as clinical and midas- touch goal
scoring instincts.
The players are indeed the embodiment of any club as they are
cardinal to the growth and survival of any club world wide. With
Liberia being part of the global village, it is expedient that the
country's players be well respected and as well given all forms of
protection, guidance and support in making their jobs unique.
It is quite melancholic that our players in this part of the world
are not well attended to like their counterparts in other parts of
the world. The rights of players have being trampled upon in so many
ways which to a large extent have served as menace to their good
form.
Players in Liberia are considered the least in a club. Some don't
even sign contracts with their clubs, and if contracts are signed,
the players are not guided, they have no agents or guidance to
direct them or to even serve as witnesses, and they are not even
given copies of these so called contracts which has always become
detrimental to their well being as people kicking the global
leather.
Also, players are dropped at times at the heel of a season without
any benefit in terms of cash, but only a pity free agent
certificate. Indeed, the players are the most vulnerable in the
local game.
One cannot make mention of insurance benefits, as it is completely
in exigent. Even the senior national team players are not insured
least one speak of a club team that is way down the pecking order.
The problems are enormous, and as an antidote in expunging this
menace, there is a serious need for the "Players Union".
The union will serve as a protective organ in putting players
careers on track. Through this union, players activities will be
well organized and coordinated.
Through this union also, players will have agents who would guide
them in playing football. Club administrators would then be brought
to book in case of bending the rules with respect to player's
welfare.
The formulation of such reputable organization will go a long way in
making amends as players will be well harnessed in so many ways.
We must whole heartedly model from other countries round the world
if we are to make strides on the continent.
