Greece based Oliver Makor made sure Liberia remains in the race to
qualify for the next stage of the combined 2010 World and African
Nations Cup qualifiers.
Having come from the bench to tie the score during the 1-1 draw with
The Scorpions of The Gambia on June 1, 2008, the combative midfielder
scored in the dying minutes of the match for the Lone Star of Liberia
on Sunday, June 15, 2008 against the visiting Lions of Teranga of
Senegal.
With less five minutes left to end the official time, Makor, who
captains the Greek second division league side Ionikos, rolled the
ball from a corner kick for James Zortiah to give the ball back to
him. Upon receiving the ball, Makor beautifully placed it beyond the
reach of Senegalese goalkeeper Tony Sylva.
Prior to the goal by Makor, Liberia was being led 2-1 after Dioh
Williams reduced the tally for the Lone Star following a 2-0 lead by
Senegal, which got two goals from El-hadj Diouf and Ousmane N’Doye in
the early parts of the second half.
The Liberians, putting up a young team after the golden generation led
by George Weah faded away, played well in the first half with Makor
leading most of the attacking plays from midfield. However, the
failure on the part of the striking pair of Williams (Dioh), Anthony
Laffor and James Koko Lomell to put up a serious fight against the
Senegalese defense prevented the Lone Star from scoring.
The introduction of Francis Grand Pa Doe, Zah Krangar and Boakai Foday
to replace Lomell, Laffor and Ben Teekloh added some flavor for the
Lone Star attacking machinery in the second, thus leading to the two
goals.
Despite the 2-2 draw, Liberia still remains at the bottom of Group Six
with two points and the Lone Star will now play against Senegal again
this weekend in Dakar to end the four consecutive weeks of soccer
actions.
Senegal is sharing the top of the group with its Gambian neighbors
with five points after the Scorpions pulled a shocking 1-0 victory
over Algeria’s Desert Foxes on Saturday in Banjul. The Gambia
previously drew with Liberia and Senegal. |
