Lone Star Remain “Market Dog”

By Julu M. Johnson, Jr.

The Lone Star of Liberia continue to be the whipping boys of Group One of the 2006 Nations and World Cup qualifiers.

The Liberian national team fell 2-0 to the Red Devils of the Republic of Congo (Brazzaville) at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex in Paynesville before the naked eyes of the nation’s two foremost soccer greats, George Oppong Weah and James Salinsa Debbah as well as former goalkeeper Pewu Bestman.

Playing with a 100% local side, with the starting squad comprising Saylee Swen, Sackie Doe, Gizzie Dorbor, Varmah Kpoto, Shelton Barlee, Abu Sando, James Lomell, Robert Teah, Rufus Salue, Isaac Tondo and Prince Garwo, the Liberians conceded the first goal in less than five minutes of the first half and after several attempts to find the equalizer failed, the visitors added the other goal with 15 minutes left to end full time.

As the Lone Star were two goals down, the few home supporters that showed up for the match had no option but to jeer at their own team but cheered for the guest team at to wipe out their shame.

The combination of Frank Jerico Nagbe, Joseph “Kofi Bruce” Sion and Wilfred Tijani “Green Banana” Lardner to head the Lone Star technical star brought no solution to the team’s woes.

The defeat came not as a surprise because the Lone Star are known these days for losing matches, especially in recent times.

Lying at the bottom of Group One with just four points from eight matches, the Lone Star have two matches against Togo and Zambia before closing the qualifiers.
