By Julu M. Johnson, Jr.

The Acting Chairman of National Transitional Government of Liberia (NTGL), Wesley Momo Johnson, hosted a luncheon Wednesday at the Executive Mansion for the Lone Star.

The luncheon was part of an Executive celebration for the Lone Star’s 1-0 victory over the Eagles of Mali on Sunday.
During the reception, the Director of the Cabinet, Soko V. Sackor lauded the team for “putting Liberia on the map.”

Sackor also lauded Youth and Sports Minister Wheatonia Dixon-Barnes for her vigorous campaign in bringing back the spirit of the Lone Star.

To the team, Sackor said, “The country is behind you in making sure the team reach places.”
“We will make sure that the Lone Star will be the only shining star. You will always have our support and count on us whenever you need help”, the Cabinet Director said.

For his part, the Acting Head of State, Vice Chairman Johnson said “as a way of saying thank you, we will make available US$6,000 to go towards the salaries of the technical staff.”
LFA President Izetta Wesley hailed the Acting Chairman for the luncheon and expressed her gratitude over the contribution. “Something is better than nothing,” she said.

“Without finances, nothing can be done”, the LFA President said.

Meanwhile, she appealed that effective security measures should be put in place during future Lone Star matches to avoid the country being fined for over crowdedness.

Sports Minister Wheatonia Dixon-Barnes also thanked the Acting Chairman for the invitation extended the team, but said, “Our security was the worst in our history.”

She expressed the hope that improvement be made by the time the Lone Star meets Togo on July 4 in Monrovia.

The Sports Minister commended the efforts of the Liberian Petroleum Refining Company (LPRC), the Bittar Brothers Construction Company and the Lone StarCell company for making the match with Mali a reality through their respective contributions.

She disclosed that an account has been established at ECOBANK for contributions to the Lone Star. LPRC Deputy Managing Director Emmanuel Zoe Pennue pledged US$1,000 to the Lone Star technical staff and US$500 to the players.

Sunday Seah spoke on behalf of the players and promised a good result against the Red Devils of Congo in Brazzaville on June 20.

Surprisingly, the occasion was held without Lone Star captain James Salinsa Debbah and head coach Kadallah Kromah. The likes of George Gebro, Dioh Williams, Varmah Kpoto, Jimmy Dixon, Ben Teekloh and Frank Seator were also not there. No reasons were given for their absence.
