Amidst War:
Lone Star Brings Smile
-flogs Ethopia 1-0

Frank Seator ( The Lone Pro in the Game)

June 10,2003

The refurbished Antoinette Tubman Stadium in Monrovia was a place of history making yesterday when the Lone Star of Liberia brought smiles to the war wearied people of Liberia by defeating their Ethiopian counterparts 1-0.

The match was in continuation of the series of the 2004 Nations Cup slated for Tunisia. The game was shifted from the SKD Sports Complex to accommodate internally displaced persons. The Lone Star was playing with out utility players George Geebro, Delee Johnson and others, and demonstrated their ability to handle tough challenges in a rather balanced encounter.

Both teams were over cautious in the first half of the match in an apparent attempt to avoid defeat. But the hopeful group of Liberians who made it to the ATS yesterday had something to cheer about midway in the second half when Tunis based Frank Seator’s chest pass landed on the leg of mid-fielder Stephen Mennoh who later blasted into the Ethiopian net for the only goal of the match.

The Ethiopian quest to find an equalizer was hampered when mid-fielder Mamo Alenshako was sent off for indiscipline.

The visitors who resorted to physical tactics ended up as losers when they received several yellow cards.

Speaking after the match Ethiopian professional Bayo Molu of Belgium premier club Gent complained of the artificial turf recently installed at the ATS, insisting that the match should have been played at the SKD.

Player Molu who controlled the Ethiopian mid-field during the match admitted that the weather condition also contributed to their defeat.
