3/ 19/ 2004 Monrovia-The Liberian
national soccer team, Lone Star, has defeated the soccer team of the
Irish contingent serving with the United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL).
In a friendly encounter played last Saturday, the Lone Star soccer
squad won 5-3 against the Irish contingent at the Antoinette Tubman
Stadium (ATS).
The match, which formed part of the build-up to the 2006 World Cup
and Nations Cup qualifiers, saw Isaac Tondo of LPRC Oilers and Takpo
Sonkarliey of Mighty Barrolle keeping the Irish defense busy
throughout the match.
After receiving a splendid pass from a teammate, LPRC Oilers hitman
Varney Boakai rounded up three opposing defenders before putting the
ball at the back of the net.
Takpo Sonkarliey ran past three Irish defenders to give the Lone
Star the second goal.
Mighty Barrolle stopper Solomon Wesseh alias Jean Pierre made it 3-0
for the Lone Star before half time.
Back from recess, the Irish peacekeepers exhibited some level
Meanwhile, the Lone Star met the Irish team for the second time and
won 6-2.
