Cosmos win the Coke Cup
As man-of-the-match Liberian international Anthony Laffor Shines

Jomo Cosmos Players © Touchline PhotoJomo Cosmos grabbed their second Coca-Cola Cup after they beat SuperSport United 4-1 in a penalty shoot-out at a packed Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane on Saturday.

Neither side could find the back of the net during a steady-paced 90 minutes but found the net within the space of a minute during extra-time.

With the game heading for the dreaded penalty shoot-out Tebogo Mokoena put Cosmos in the lead after 109 minutes.

However, United came back almost immediately as Mandla Zwane equalised to arrange the lottery of spot kicks.

The first half saw both teams matching each other in midfield and with goalkeepers Calvin Marlin and Avril Phali in fine form the strikers found no joy.

Mamadou Diallo, Christopher Katongo and Anthony Laffor often threatened to score but Marlin comfortably dealt with all they could throw at him.

Phali too was not exactly having to make match-winning saves from the likes of Katlego Mphela, Daine Klate and Abram Raselemane.

South Africa internationals Siboniso Gaxa and United skipper Ricardo Katza were in fine form in front of Marlin and battled hard with Diallo and Laffor.

In midfield Cosmos’ Bamuza Sono worked well together with Mokoena but Edward Williams and Raselemane responded to nullify their opponents’ threats.

Both sets of players were visibly drained after 90 minutes of action in the Polokwane heat, but the standard of football never dropped.

Sensing the tired legs of Matsatsantsa, Laffor entertained the crowd with his deft touches while creating openings for his teammates.

Although the Liberian himself could not find a way past Katza, his contribution in the opening goal was key.

It was his cross that Mokoena lunged at and stabbed home from eight yards to put his team in the lead and, judging by the celebrations, giving them the Coke Cup.

The celebrations proved premature as United surged forward and dampened their spirits with a well-timed header from Zwane.

Penalties ensued and man-of-the-match Laffor stepped up first to beat SA keeper Marlin. Katza stepped up for United but Phali guessed right and gave Cosmos an early advantage.

Diallo and Innocent Ntsume beat Marlin too. Phil Evans scored but Raselemane’s effort was expertly saved by Phali.

Mokoena stepped up for the final kick and found the net again, sending the Cosmos bench into frenzy.

The Coca-Cola Cup remains the only major tournament trophy missing from the United cabinet.
