Liberia coach in U-turn

Frank Nagbe
Nagbe was mandated to build a squad of local players

Liberia coach Frank Nagbe has backed down over the use of mainly local players for the 2008 African Nations Cup qualifiers.

Football authorities in the West African country mandated the coach to start building a solid home-based squad for the 2010 World Cup qualifiers when he was appointed in July but that prompted a hostile public backlash.

Nagbe had to be rescued by police from irate fans last month when his squad of mainly locals failed to impress during a friendly match ahead of their opening match in the qualifiers.

The former international has now called up eight of the country's well known foreign-based players for the Group Five qualifier against Rwanda next month.

"I see that the administrators who mandated me to build a new team around the locals are now backing off from their own plan," Nagbe told BBC Sport.

"They want me to qualify for Ghana 2008 and that was not the plan when I was appointed.

"We will have to now change our strategy as public expectation over our performance is unrealistic."

The Greece-based duo of Oliver Makor and Kelvin Sebwe will be making their return after a four-year absence.

The midfielders' last appearance for the Lone Star was at the 2002 African Nations Cup in Mali.

Also coming from Greece is Atromitos FC striker Francis Doe.

Others are the Sweden-based duo of Jimmy Dixon and Dioh Williams, goalkeeper Louis Crayton of the Swiss side FC Basel, midfielder Anthony Laffor of South Africa's Jomo Cosmos and Indonesia-based striker Zah Krangar.

The Lone Star lost their opening Group Five game 2-1 away to Equatorial Guinea earlier this month.

They have an arduous task as they also face Cameroon in the group.
