Liberia, Zambia to clash in empty stadium

Fans Will be kept away from this Match

Monrovia, Liberia, 10/01 - Liberia and Zambia will play the last leg of the joint World Cup/African Nations Cup qualifying match here Saturday in an empty stadium, the Liberian FA announced Friday.

Billed for the second national stadium, the Antoinette Tubman Stadium in central Monrovia, the spectator-less match would be the first of its kind in Liberia`s football history.

FA secretary-general Yanquoi Borsey told reporters that the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and world football governing body FIFA were penalizing Liberia for crowd violence during and after the country`s last home match against Senegal months ago.

Senegal defeated Liberia 3-0 amidst hooliganism by local fans that led to injuries and attack and looting of the homes, cars and businesses of former national football coach Kadala Kromah and FA president Izetta Wesley.

The violence spread from the Samuel K. Doe national stadium in the suburbs of Monrovia to the streets of the city center.

Coach Kromah resigned hours later, saying he feared for his life giving the violence against him.

Meanwhile, Liberian FA authorities have advised local fans to stay away from the stadium, and listen to radio commentary of the match on the national radio.
