The Ministry of Sport has
rejected the appointment of Joseph Sayon as Liberia's
caretaker coach.
The former assistant coach was named by the Liberia
Football Association (LFA) on 5 November.
He replaced Kadala Kromah, who resigned after his home
and car were vandalized by fans on 10 October, following the
Lone Star's 3-0 loss to Senegal in a 2006 World Cup
qualifier.
In a letter to the LFA, Sports Minister Wheatonia Barnes
described their decision to appoint the caretaker coach as
unacceptable and disrespectful.
"We are constrained to reject the appoint of Mr. Sayon
due to the LFA's failure to consult and make recommendation
to the ministry for approval, following the resignation of
the former technical manager.
"This is an affront to my office as the LFA has no
appointing powers," Barnes claimed.
In the past, the procedure was that the LFA finds
suitable candidates and then forwards its recommendations to
the ministry for approval and subsequent appointment.
Barnes also pointed out that the contracts of the Lone
Star technical staff will expire at the end of the year.
"All positions will be declared vacant and current
employees will have to reapply," the minister stated.
The LFA has accused the ministry of interfering in the
technical and managerial matters of the national team.
