Clubs like Mighty Barolle are short of players
The Liberia Football Association has ended this season's league
competition as a result of the civil strife that gripped the country
over the last few months.
The new eight-club format had entered its third round of fixtures when
heavy fighting began around the capital Monrovia.
FA secretary-general Yanqueh Borsay told BBC sport website that they
were left with no choice but to take the tough decision, despite the
fact that peace was slowly returning to the country.
The clubs were harshly affected by the fighting
LFA secretary-general Yanqueh Borsay
"Most of the clubs were harshly affected by the fighting.
"Facilities were looted and damaged, while their players fled the
country into safety elsewhere," he said.
The clubs, whose representatives sat on the FA's decision-making
committee, did not oppose the move.
A direct consequence of the FA's decision is that Liberian clubs will
not be able to participate in next year's continental club
competitions.
"Even if the league were to continue, it would not have ended in time
to allow us forward the names of the winning clubs to Caf," Borsay
said.
Meanwhile, the FA has begun what it described as "off-season
resuscitation games" amongst select clubs at Monrovia's Antoinette
Tubman Stadium.
