James Debbah is a surprise inclusion in the Liberia squad
Liberia have called up nine overseas-based players for their home
fixture against Mali in the 2006 World Cup and African Cup of
Nations qualifier.
One of the biggest surprises in coach Kadala Kromah's squad is the
Bahrain-based James Debbah, who announced his retirement from
international football after the 2002 Nations Cup finals in Mali.
Oliver Makor, who plays for Ionikos in Greece, is also included
despite his refusal to play for the Lone Star in protest over the
government's failure to support the team in Mali 2002.
Spain-based Prince Daye, who has often turned his back in Liberia as
he tries consolidate a career in Europe, is named too.
Other overseas-based players in the squad are goalkeeper Sunday Sieh,
who plays in India and defenders Jimmy Dixon and Dioh Williams who
both ply their trade in Sweden.
Kromah is confident that the players will honour his invitation to
join the squad.
"Debbah is already in Monrovia and the football association will be
consulting with him over his inclusion," Kadala explained.
"The association are also contacting both Prince Daye and Oliver
Makor.
"The World Cup is a very high profile competition so we need both
experience and quality players especially for this match against a
highly-rated team like Mali," .
As well as Mali the Lone Star will take on Senegal, Zambia, Togo,
and Congo in the 2006 qualifying campaign. |
