Liberia Lost Promising Female Star To Ghana
 - As Angels Set To Get Big Cash

February 3, 2005

Female football in the country may not be on par with the rest of Africa, with relatively few Clubs and no green root development.

But, in the midst of all these hurdles, there are immense talents the country is endowed with that are helping to expose Liberian female football on the bigger stage.

One player of such talent is the promising female sensation Veronica A. Weinh alias Ockocha.

The super striker is making headway in the Ghanaian league as she has won the hearts of many people in that soccer crazy Nation for her great skills, artillery shots, superb ball artistry and constant knock for goals.

The former Earth Angels Star is now the leading scorer for the Sekondi Hasaacas Football Club in the Ghanaian elite league.

The club nick named the Hasmal Ladies, has Okocha as their Lynchpin.

She has netted in twelve goals in six matches with an average of two goals in every match.

They are the leading scoring team in the season and are second on the table behind Angate of Sekondi.

Due to her exploits, she has been invited to the Ghanaian U-19 and the National team known as the Black Queens.

She emerged as most valuable player in a four Nation tournament in Nigeria for the U-19, which also included Togo and Benin.

The purposeful striker netted in for her side the third goal in their 5-0 demolition of the host Nigeria at the famous Surelere Stadium in Lagos.

The promising female star who typifies the craftiness of the Nigerian and Bolton Captain Jay-Jay Okocha, who she considered her favorite player, said due to the inability of football authorities to set up a well structured female football development in the country, she had to grab the Ghanaian offer.

"I want to excel in my career. And, I received good offer from them. So I had to accept it", she said.

In a related development, Liberia female league champion Earth Angels are to get big cash as three other players, which include the offense minded Dekontee Sayon, and explosive Famatte Boimah and net buster Amelia Washington have passed trials of Sekondi and are to adorn the club's jerseys upon the submission of the transfer documents.

Amelia Washington was the top scorer in a recently organized tournament in Ghana.

According to the Director of Sekondi Hasaacas, Ben Nab Eyison, the Liberian quartet of Weinh, Sayon, Washington and Boimah are all outstanding.

And their successes have paved the way for more players from the land of rising stars-Liberia.

Other Liberian players in Ghana are striker Zevee alias McCarthy of Faith Ladies and goal keeper Otee of Post F.C.
