Liberian Striker Leon Brown Makes
Debut with Riverhounds in The A League
Washington, Pa - The Riverhounds FC (1-0-1) outscored the Western
Mass Pioneers (1-2-1) by a score of 2-1 at Falconi Field Saturday.
The contentious contest thrilled the 2300 fans until the end.
In the 27th minute Steve Mellor appeared to score with an assist
from Leone Browne, but was denied the point due to an off-side call.
When Coach Gene Klein questioned the call, he was ejected (28th
minute), energizing his team even more. The HOUNDS® would not be
denied – Leone Browne scored his first goal as a Riverhound in
the 31st minute.
Western Mass’s Omar McFarlane took a shot in the 41st minute, when
HOUNDS® goalie Terry McNelis had a stellar save, maintaining the
Riverhounds’ lead as they recessed for the half.
In the second period, The HOUNDS lit up the board again when Nathan
Salsi scored in 54th minute; Stephen Mellor was credited with the
assist.
The Pioneers finally got on the board in the 82nd minute when Jeff
Daren scored.
“These guys showed a lot of heart and made a tremendous effort,”
commented Gene Klein. “Western Mass had a lot of pressure on them.
We had hoped to come out of this weekend with a couple of victories,
but I’m proud of the effort these guys put forth.”
The Riverhounds play on the road for the remainder of May, traveling
to Cincinnati, Richmond, and Harrisburg. They return home to Falconi
Field on June 2nd when they host the Richmond Kickers.
