April 7, 2006

The Liberia National U-20 Female team's recently victory in the ongoing FIFA Women Cup qualifiers competition is said to be received with commendation by many Liberians and sports institutions.

One institution that has jubilated overwhelmingly by the victory is the Liberia Women and Sports Association (LIWASA).

Addressing a press conference on Thursday at a local restaurant, LIWASA President Deborah Williams said they were overjoyed by the team's victory, and described it good and encouraging for the Country.

Madam Williams said the team's performance was a clear indication that the female team is prepared to compete with the male counterpart in bringing pride to the country.

According to her for the first time the female team has made a significant history that will highly be remembered by all Liberians since the game was introduced in 1986.

The LIWASA boss also hoped that the team's splendid performance will open a new chapter where females will be given the same opportunity like their male counterpart in all areas for the good of the country.

She further used the occasion to commend President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf for launching the female fund drive a month ago which gave some edge to the success of the team.

In a related development, in a bid to create a data base information for women activities, the Liberia Women and Sports Association (LIWASA) has begun a two months nation-wide stencil in the country.

In a release issued recently and signed by its President Madam Deborah Williams, the two months research project entitled "National Research on Women and Sports," which begun Monday, March 27 is intended to establish the roll on Women sports activities.

According to her, LIWASA has been deeply concerned over the years regarding women's sports activities in the country.

She said women are people who have the ability of doing what men are capable of doing and as such data base information on women is significant for the association.

Madam Williams revealed that the project is one in series of three that have been approved for sponsorship by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the Olympic Solidarity through the Liberia National Olympic Committee (LNOC).

The LIWASA boss further said that the objectives of the project are to establish a data base and information clearing house on women and sports in Liberia and to adequately inform women in Liberia about women and sports activities.

Though the LIWASA release did not say how much the IOC has given for the ongoing project through the local body, but it is believed to be around US$4,000.

The ongoing LIWASA sponsorship project has highly been welcomed by many Liberians who describe it as great and encouraging at this crucial time of the country's history.

It is coming at the time when the country has produced Africa's first female head of state, and in Liberia where women have now begun to play significant roles in the President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf-led government.
