Contrary to Liberian clubs making headways in the CAF Champions
League, it was rather three Liberian referees that performed
respectably during the weekend.
The referees-Benedict Yarsiah, Alphonso Nyanti and Augustine Gooding
officiated the first leg match in the 2003 CAF Champions League
involving Accra Hearts of Oak and AS Douanes of Togo at the Accra
Sports Stadium.
The 2000 CAF Champions League winners and sixth time Ghanaian League
holders needed a solitary header from Wisdom Abbey in the second half
to seal their narrow win.
Benedict Yarsiah served as the center referee and was ably assisted by
Alphonso Nyanti and Augustine Gooding as Lines-man one and Lines-man
two respectively.
Considering the football rivalry between the two neighboring countries
and the intense temperament of the encounter, the assignment became
much more grueling when the Togolese started the match with
brandishing studs and scaring lunges.
However, Benedict Yarsiah sprayed the first yellow card at the captain
of AS Douanes, which meant tempers weren’t going to blaze as far as
the rest of the match was concern.
Totally, he splashed four yellow cards for bookable offenses with the
Togolese receiving three while Hearts captain Joe Ansah got the other.
Perfect co-ordination, timeliness and the exact application of the
rules of the game didn’t only characterize their refereeing, they also
entreated the players with sportsmanship.
