The 2009 Liberia Football Association
(LFA) premiership is over with traditional outfit Mighty Barrolle
emerging as champions while sensational LPRC Oilers and youthful
Barrack Young Controllers (BYC) are on the pecking order of second
and third spots respectively.
While the players are on vacation after
showcasing their talents in the top flight of Liberian football,
with some on course of seeking professional contracts oversea ,
connoisseurs can look back with much to remember in terms of the
dram, excitement and verve which were associated with top flight
footballer of a country that is on record of producing Africa's
FOOTBALL LEGEND, KING GEORGE OPPONG MANNEH WEAH, who conquered the
world in 1995 with his intrinsic qualities in scooping an
avalanche of awards including the FIFA World Footballer of the
year, European Footballer of the Year, African Footballer of the
Year as well as Onze Mondial.
Pundits rate the LFA 2009 season as arguably
the best in terms of its fierce competition as well as the size of
the league (18 teams - 34 matches each)
After such epic competition,
www.liberiansoccer.com Senior Reporter Roland M. Mulbah
looks at the best players cum stars in the LFA 2009 premiership
who have been nominated for top awards.

Best Coach Award
1) Abraham Sese (BYC)
The young tactician showed consistency when
he led youthful LFA premier outfit, Barrack Young Controllers (BYC)
to a surprise splendid performance in the just concluded LFA
league.
Coach Sese guided BYC to secure third spot
in the LFA premiership and as well thrashed Sensational LPRC
Oilers in the knock out finals to secure a place in the
Confederation of African Football (CAF) 2010 competition.
He is indeed among coaches Liberia can boast
of.
2) Eric Thompson, alias Christian Cole
(Mighty Barrolle)
He is the most decorated coach in the LFA
premiership after winning two out of the six LFA premiership.
He guided Mighty Barrolle to clinch its third
LFA premiership in the just concluded epic chase.
He as well, took the Rollers to two CAF
competitions and will do same early 2010.
3) Gabriel Johns (LPRC Oilers)
Though many refereed to him as the worst
coach in contemporary Liberian football since he blundered in
clinching the LFA premiership after taking more than 12 points
lead, Coach Johns is still being rated among Liberia’s best coach.
He has the record as the first coach to go
the entire first phase unbeaten in the top flight of Liberian
football when he guided the gold and black outfit to achieve such
feat in the just concluded 18 teams LFA premiership.
Best Goalkeeper
Samuel Cooper (Mighty Barrolle)
The youngster is at the verge of retaining
the LFA best goalkeeper award with another splendid performance
where he helped the kanyan pepper outfit to another record three
out of six LFA premiership.
For two seasons now, the youthful gloves man
has shown consistency for Barrolle with an impressive performance
in the 2009 CAF competition in Abidjan, Ivory Coast.
He is among Liberia’s best local goalkeepers.
2) Saylee Swen (LPRC Oilers)
It would be a miscarriage of justice were one
to keep the eccentric goal tender Saylee Swen in Oblivion. His
nerve wrecking saves, superb penalty conversions and leadership
ability from between the sticks were reasons LPRC Oilers secured
the runners-up spot in the LFA premiership and as well, made the
Liberian international inarguably among the best in the country.
3)Archieboy Harris (BYC)
The lad had a terrific debut in the LFA
premiership for BYC after taking the mantle of first choice goalie
for the youthful LFA premiership outfit.
He is remembered for so many great
performances including two against LPRC Oilers in the 2-1 win as
well as the LFA knock out final where his side also won 1-0.
The former Tony FC magic hands is indeed one
of the trusted goalkeepers Liberia can rely on.
Best defender
This is one department keen observers of
Liberian football will find difficult to select the best after the
three nominees showed superb performance in the just concluded
league.
1) Sam Peters (Mighty Barrolle)
A very hard tackling defender who was one of
the reasons champions Mighty Barrolle kept clean sheets in most of
their melees. Partnering with whosoever, the rising star kept rein
on opposing strikers in elegance and is indeed a harder worker in
the defensive third.
2) Bill Paytoe (LPRC Oilers)
A very diminutive, but difficult to get by
defender.
Serving as a deep lying defender for the
Oilers, the former Invincible Eleven (IE) defender cleared the
pieces and showed great alertness in controlling the defense. His
calmness, patience and intelligence make him a player to look out
for.
3) Myers Garloe (BYC)
This no nonsense rearguard was a pillow in
central defense for the dark-horses Barrack Young Controller (BYC).
His lithe marking, strong tackles and whole
hearted approach were reasons why BYC could not just succumb to
so-called superior opponents.
He is certainly a tough character who proved
to be an asset for the LFA knockout champions (BYC) that also
clinched third place in the top flight.
Best Midfielder
1) Queejay Continenta (BYC)
His defense splitting passes illuminated his
side attacking forays, and is no doubt a joy to watch. In the
heart of BYC midfield, the explosive midfielder sprayed the passes
with ease and grace as his frontrunners latched on to them to
cause menace for opponents.
2) Little Lewis (Mighty Barrolle)
He was the fulcrum of the champions, Mighty
Barrolle midfield. His defense-confusing passes, sublime skills
and creative vision set the Rollers on tone for the title.
He plays with much ease and in a relaxed
fashion as he spread the passes in a unique and eye catching
fashion. Also, good at executing set pieces, he is 'Little' by
name but 'big' by doing what he knows best, playing football.
3) Marcus Macauley (Monrovia Club
Breweries)
He is regarded as the brain in the Breweries
midfield. This sublimely gifted prodigy provided a plethora of
assists in his side matches. He raised the game if he wishes and
slow down the tempo by playing one touch simple football to his
liking.
His vision and flair make him a prodigious
talent in the fold.
Most Valuable Player (MVP)
1. Nuzohn Kulala (Mighty Barrolle Captain)
He was the symbol of Barrolle's attack and
is indeed the best player in the country. The crafty left footed
forward who is endowed with sublime skills and good scoring
ability is regarded as the crowd favorite, Zidenmaro as he is also
known might not be the biggest of players, but he can get pass any
one on a day with his magical skills cum Midas touch.
2) Jacob Goe (BYC)
Tiny but deadly, the BYC attacking ace proved
a handful for opponents as his multi talents, good finishing and
precision made his name a household word on the local scene. His
bravery and tenacity kept his side alive as he chased the game,
took it to opponents and scored several salient goals.
As captain of the youthful LFA premier
outfit, Goe also guided his side to win the LFA knockout
championship with a fantastic 1-0 edging of big gun LPRC Oilers
Though he is such a tiny footballer, the
statement by former Nigerian tiny international Tijani Babangida
that "a man true size is his heart" proved itself as Goe
terrorized defenses to the disbelief of many.
3) George Kerkula (Adorrence FC)
His seventeen goals helped Adorrence FC to a
large extent from being relegated. His placidness in front goal
and quick movement added a different dimension to his side attack.
He too like many good performers is being
hunted by many clubs.
