LFA Honors
Soccer Veterans

By Julu M. Johnson, Jr.
The Liberia Football Association (LFA) has bestowed honors on past
players.
At the 2006 Congress held in Kakata, Margibi County from March 18 to
19, 2006, the LFA recognized 16 former players for their splendid
performances on the local football scene.
Most of the players, according to the LFA, did play for the
traditional archrivals Mighty Barrolle and Invincible Eleven (IE) as
well as the former great Bame and the national football team, Lone
Star.
Among those honored were Anthony Nagbe (Strongman Nagbe), Joseph Sion
alias Kofi Bruce, Joseph Jokar Wreachar, Nelson Sonpon, Francis Sebo
Dweh, Johnny Grant and Sayon Davies.
Also honored by the LFA were Felix Koko Wleh Kofa, Sampson Teah alias
Teah Fokofo, William Nagbe or Big Nagbe, Philibert Sebo Doe and
“Defense Minister” Washington Blay.
The likes of James Bannerman, Robert Seton, Robert Sayon and Anthony
Papie Sumo conclude the list of honorees.
Responding to the honors on behalf of the former football stars that
made names during pre-war Liberia, the President of the former Lone
Star Players Association, Washington Blay lauded the LFA for
recognizing them.
He, however, suggested that next time the LFA should attach cash prize
to the normal certificates considering the sorrowful plights of most
the former players.
Meanwhile, two former referees were also honored by the LFA.
The LFA honored Jacob Jeetoe and J. Nah Dweh, who were both FIFA badge
referees that represented the nation on numerous international
assignments. |
