LFA
Gives Footballs to Guthrie
April 12, 2006
The much talked about Guthrie rubber plantation is arguably regarded
as one of the most feared areas in the country.
Located in Bomi County, the area is notorious for the huge presence of
ex-combatants, which many say poses a major threat to security.
But as the saying goes sports thrives where politics fails and the LFA
Secretary General Yanqueh Borsay did just that when visited the area
on Thursday last week.
As part of the local football house's keen interest in taking the game
to the people, Mr. Borsay, on behalf of the LFA donated four balls to
the ex-combatants, and promised additional two.
Making the donation, the LFA chief scribe noted that they were
sensitive to the plight of the ex-combatants who he described as an
integral part of the society that cannot in any way be ostracized.
Mr. Borsay noted that in a couple of weeks the local football house,
through its technical department, will hold a workshop at the
plantation where the ex-combatants will have the opportunity to
broaden their horizon in football.
It was also stated that a tournament would be staged as well to enable
them show their soccer talents.
Accompanying Mr.Borsay was Liberia's International Coordinator for
Youth and Sports, Steve B Davis.
In a brief statement, the highly resourceful sports administrator
indicated that the ex-combatants are part of the society, and that all
should be done to encourage them to reintegrate in the community if
the country must move forward.
He then reaffirmed his commitment in working with the LFA and the
Ministry of Youth and Sports (MYS) in formulating those programs that
would enhance the capacity of ex-combatants and athletes in general.
Pundits say the decision of the LFA under the leadership of the "Iron
Lady" Sombo Izetta Wesley to take the game to Guthrie which is
regarded as a focus point for many ex-combatants is a positive step in
the right direction, and as such they should be applauded.
They believe through this venture the young men and women out there
would begin to redirect their attention to a much more positive
endeavor.
