For the first time in history, the Liberia Basketball Federation (LBF)
will be taking a huge responsibility from the Federation of
International Basketball Association (FIBA) to host the female edition
of the Zone-3 basketball competition.
Speaking to Our Sports Desk on Tuesday, LBF Secretary General Fred
Patti said the Federation has received a two-page letter from their
governing body, giving them the green light to stage this prestigious
female competition.
The FIBA two-page letter to the local Federation said "I have the
pleasure to you that your country is assigned to organize the Zone-3
preliminaries of the African Nations Championship (ANC) for Senior
Women.
These preliminaries will be held from 1st to 12th April 2005".
The FIBA communication also named eight countries that will
participate in the games. They include "Benin, Burkina-Faso, Ivory
Coast, Ghana, Niger and host Liberia".
In conformity with the unified rules of competition, the FIBA
communication noted that "The Organizers' fee for this competition is
US$3,000.
The LBF International Body communication further pointed out that "The
host country of FIBA Africa competition shall cover (Article 43&45)
which states that the Federation will be responsible for the flight
tickets, accommodation, and the allowances of FIBA delegates,
Technical Commissioners and neutral referees.
The FIBA letter also observed that the fees for officiating as an
allowance of its delegates, Technical Commissioners and Neutral
referees are the following: "US$3.00 for a session less than three
days (two games maximum), US$6.00 for session of three days and more
(three games and more) and accompanying referees will be paid US$20 as
pocket money (allowance) only for the days of the competition".
"The accommodation and local transportation of the visiting teams for
eighteen persons (18) per delegation will be the responsibility of
each participating team as they will be paying US$40 per person each
day", the FIBA communication concluded.
LBF chief scribe has described the hosting of the week-long
competition as a great challenge for the federation.
"The organizing of this tournament will serve as a great opportunity
for basketball, which has been out of the international scene for a
number of years" he said.
According to him, the Federation can only achieve the successful
hosting of this competition with the support of all Liberians.
The Liberia Basketball Federation (LBF) won the right to host Zone-3
Female Basketball Tournament last year at the General Assembly of the
Federation of International Basketball Association (FIBA) in Ivory
Coast.
