Kparkillen Reunites Displaced Lofans Thru Soccer
By Julu M. Johnson, Jr.
Indeed soccer is a unifier. That's arguably
why the NTLA member Stanley Kparkillen spearheaded a soccer
tournament involving displaced Lofans based in Maimu and Salala,
Bong County.
The event began on Friday, May 21, 2004 among six
districts of the County, that were represented by the displaced
Lofans.
Before the tournament kicked off, an official opening
ceremony, including a parade, was held with officials of the Lofa
County Displaced Committee as well as Honorable Kparkillen in
attendance.
On the field, Salayea declared the festival open with a
2-1 defeat of Vahun.
However, it was Vahun that got the first goal through Eric Danason
before Martor Gbagleh tied the score in the first half. Later,
Joseph Lilon won the match for Salayea from a spotkick.
In game two, before the eyes of its prominent citizen
Joseph Farkollie, Kolahun bowed 1-0 to Zorzor via Fredrick Deyekeh.
The last match of the day was between Foya and
Voinjama, with the latter snatching a 1-0 victory from a penalty.
The tournament continued on Saturday and the only match
of the day ended 1-1 between Salayea and Zorzor. Stephen Saywallah
scored first for Zorzor before Salayea equalized from a Dixon Vallah
effort.
On Sunday, Zorzor easily walked over the Lofa County's
capital Voinjama 2-0. Fredrick Deyekeh scored in the first half as
Stephen Saywallah added the other in the subsequent half.
The match that followed on Sunday produced a 3-1
celebration for Salayea at the expense of Voinjama.
After Salayea went up twice, including one goal from
Nathaniel Kollie, Richard Harris pulled one back before Dixon Vallah
made it 3-1.
At the end of the three-team semi final, Salayea and
Zorzor were tied at four points each as well as a goal difference of
2 each, the organizers decided to settle the matter through a
replay.
Notwithstanding, when Zorzor met Salayea in the final
showdown Sunday evening, the battle ended 0-0 before numerous fans
as well as Honorable Stanley Kparkillen and Dr. Roland Massaquoi.
The winner was then decided on Monday, May 24 through only
penalty shootouts that was won by Zorzor 5-3.
A beautiful and large trophy was presented to the winning
team by Honorable Kparkillen who had spent the last four days at the
Salala displaced camp, making sure that the tournament was held.
After expressing his delight about the tournament, Honorable
Kparkillen offered two scholarships to the players that were named
Most Valuable Players, Joseph Lilon of Salayea and Amos Ben of
Voinjama.
He pledged L$1,500 to first place Zorzor, L$1,000 to
second place Salayea and L$750 to third place Voinjama.
The tournament, co-named "Peace and Reconciliation
Football and Kickball Tournament," was also intended to raise funds
that would facilitate the process of the repatriation and
resettlement of Lofa citizens currently displaced in Maimu and
Salala, Bong County to their various towns and villages.
