February 28, 2003
With the Ethiopia Vs. Liberia
match in the 2004 African Nations’ Cup qualifier scheduled on the
weekend of March 28, 2003, the technical manager of the National
football team, the Lone Star, Kadalah Kromah has selected 16
foreign-based for the encounter.
Reports received by our Sports Desk have it
that coach Kromah has already submitted the list of selected players
to the Liberia Football Association (LFA), who are the managers of the
National football team, the Lone Star for onward forwarding to the
Ministry of Youth and Sports.
Those selected for the Ethiopia match include midfield
maestro Kelvin Sebwe (UAE), machine
man Oliver Makor (Greece), utility player Zizi Roberts (U.S.A.),

The technical staff has left out the likes of Christopher

Josiah JB Seton, who is currently in top scoring form for his team.
Meanwhile, upon submission to the Sports
Ministry, it has been learned that the MYS which is responsible to
secure funds for the Lone Star, said the number of foreign-based
players selected by the technical staff is too much taking into
consideration the present financial constraints the government is
faced with.
The Sports Ministry said coach Kromah must select the
best from the 16 foreign-based for the game since some local players
will be selected for the encounter. “The home-based team must be the
nucleus of the team, while the foreign-based players are only invited
to beef up where there are loop holes,” an official MYS told
journalists recently at the Sports Commission.
In a related development, 25 local players have
also been selected to begin training in Monrovia for the Ethiopia
match.
Topping the list are Varmah Kpoto (who previously played in Greece),
Isaac Tondo (who just returned from South Africa on trials), Philip
Karngba, Frederick Vah, Murphy Nagbe, Henry Gobah, Sackie Doe, Lartee

Nah, Torkpor Sonkaley, Francis “Razak” Carr,, Bill Sheriff, Roland
Obedekah, Johnny Blidi and Prince Garwo.
Meanwhile, the local-based players are yet to commence
training for the Ethiopia match. According to reports, the training
was scheduled have to commenced last week Monday, but the Sports
Ministry is yet to secure funds.
There is also another report that the Finance Ministry had
informed the Sports Ministry that there was no money for the Lone Star
to continue the 2004 qualifiers, while the Chief Patron of Sports,
President Charles Taylor, assured Liberians that the Lone Star will
continue the qualifiers.
