Jerico-Led Lone Star Meet Congo Sunday

By Julu M. Johnson, Jr.

The Lone Star of Liberia will on Sunday face the Red Devils of the Republic of Congo (Brazzaville) at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex in continuation of the 2006 African Nations and World Cup qualifiers.

The Liberia Football Association (LFA) through their Secretary-General Yanqueh S. Borsay disclosed that the charismatic tactician Frank Jerico Nagbe would be the man on the technical bench for the Lone Star.

The NPA Anchors coach who was appointed by the LFA is yet to be blessed by the Ministry of Youth and Sports, led by Cllr. Wheatonia Dixon-Barnes, but the LFA insist that time is running, thus it could not longer wait on the government before giving the job to Jerico.

Sports Minister Barnes, who has a been a thorn in the flesh of the LFA in recent times regarding several issues including Jerico’s appointment, has left the country for the United States on a private visit, meaning that she would not be in Monrovia for the match.

The Lone Star are lying at the bottom of group one with four points after seven games.

The Liberian national team is to face Congo after losing six straight matches in the name of “rebuilding a new team” to replace the likes of George Weah, James Debbah, Joe Nagbe and Kelvin Sebwe but observers have pointed fingers at lack of support for the Lone Star and the failure to develop the game at home.

A bunch of locally based players will be the ones charged with the task of facing the Congolese on Sunday.

The players include Saylee Swen (LPRC  Oilers), Melvin King (Gedi & Shoes FC), Sackie Doe (IE), Varmah Kpoto (Mighty Barrolle), Patrick Nuku Granue (LPRC Oilers), Gizzie Dorbor (LISCR FC) and Shelton Barlee (LPRC Oilers). The rest are James Koko Lommel (LPRC Oilers), Solomon Grimes (Mighty Barrolle), Solomon Wesseh (LPRC Oilers), Abu Sando (Mighty Barrolle), Aloysius Pennie (LISCR FC), Bill Paytoe (IE), Rufus Salue (LPRC Oilers), George Miller (Mighty Barrolle), Isaac Pupo (LPRC Oilers), Prince Garwo (NPA Anchors) and Isaac Tondo (LPRC Oilers).
